The Legacy of Shalin Shah

Shalin Shah (July 13, 1992 – May 16, 2015) lived more in 22 years than many do in a lifetime.

Raised in Southern California, Shalin approached life with boundless curiosity, compassion, and joy. He loved deeply—his family, friends, high school sweetheart Frances, music, philosophy, sunsets, travel, children, and the simple wonder of discovering something new. He had a remarkable ability to connect with people from all walks of life and a sincere desire to make a difference in the world.

A graduate of the University of Southern California, Shalin dedicated himself to service through UNICEF and later the Peace Corps, where he served as a Community Economic Development Volunteer in Peru. Just weeks before completing his training, he was diagnosed with Stage IV synovial sarcoma, a rare and aggressive cancer. Given only months to live, Shalin chose to meet his diagnosis with extraordinary courage, gratitude, and purpose.

Even while undergoing treatment, he continued to encourage others, uplift those around him, and search for meaning in every moment. His viral HuffPost essay, "Thank You, Cancer," inspired people around the world to cherish life's simple gifts and embrace each day with intention.

Shalin's final wish was not to be remembered for the disease that took his life, but for the life he chose to live. Through the #SunsetsForShalin movement and now through Paper Flowers, his legacy continues to encourage others to love deeply, live fully, and pursue what truly matters.
